Magical Creatures of Hamakua – Animal Rescue and Sanctuary
Magical Creatures is an 501(3)(c) non-profit organization that is entirely volunteer-run. We are privileged to have an extraordinarily dedicated team. We rely on a small full-time staff of volunteers who live onsite, as well as a devoted group of local volunteers! Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and offer lifelong sanctuary to animals on the Big Island while serving the Hawaiian community with programs that promote kindness, compassion, and stewardship.
We also extend our reach through education, advocacy, and collaboration. Change starts within the community, and we are grateful for the opportunity we have to share ourย residents’ storiesย and inspire others to live more compassionately. We are helping stop the cycle of farmed animal abuse by educating others and advocating for animals every chance we get.
We have a wide range of volunteer opportunities at the sanctuary. Our feeding program involves a minimum three-month commitment with weekly shifts (approximately two hours, plus as much extra time with the animals as you’d like). We currently have shifts available on Mondays, Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. We also host weeklyย Volunteer Project Days at the sanctuary every Saturday from 10 am to 12 pm if you have a busy schedule or are just visiting the Big Island. While you will still get some time with the animals, these typically involve projects that need a few sets of hands to complete. Volunteers are welcome to join our public tour afterwards (12-2pm) at no cost. Want to contribute in some other way? We’re developing additional remote and on-site volunteer teams, including some of the roles highlighted below:
-
- Gardener: primarily maintenance of existing fruit trees, but we have plenty of land that could be developed for additional gardening
- Facilities Volunteer: assist our facilities team with various construction and maintenance activities
- Project Day Leader: lead project groups on Saturday volunteer days
- Hoof Care Volunteer: be trained on giving our goats and sheep hoof trims; previous experience in animal care and handling is required
- Volunteer Fecal Analyst: be trained on using the microscope to check goat and sheep fecal samples for parasites and determining when dewormers are required
- Tour Guide: lead tours of the sanctuary (2-4 hrs/week)
- Special Care Crew: provide much-needed love, enrichment, and physical therapy to some of our special needs residents
These roles have flexible commitments and regardless of your skills, thereโs always something to help with around the sanctuary!
To learn more, please complete ourย volunteer interest form, and our Volunteer Coordinator will be in touch soon!
