Install koinobori for Children’s Day

Friends of Liliʻuokalani Gardens

Traditional koinobori (fish windsocks) are flown usually in late April through Children’s Day to express a wish for health and strength for our community’s youngsters. Friends of Lili`uokalani Gardens returned the tradition to the Waiakea peninsula in 2017 and adds more each year. The display extends from Suisan Fish Market to Ponds Restaurant with the major display on the Mokuola Bridge.

Fresh bamboo poles are cut a day or two in advance of the installation day. Koinobori need to be sorted by size, attached to bamboo poles with swivels. Then the poles are caried to the bridge and are firmly attached. Other poles are taken to sites throughout Waiakea peninsula.
