Waipahu Intermediate Māla

Hui o Hoʻohonua

Welcome to the Waipahu Intermediate Māla project!

Located behind the Intermediate and along the Leeward Bike Path, this 7+ acre area is in itʻs early stages of becoming a food producing native forest. Since 2023, we have welcomed small groups of individuals to help us in our beginning stages of removing invasive weeds and trees, construction debris, and everyday trash such as papers and plastics

We are ramping up our efforts and are happy to welcome all community members of varying experience levels to join us in building a community who stewards the waiwai, wealth, of Waikeleʻs waterline. Join us every third Saturday of the month to pick up trash, weed invasive vines and weeds, remove cali grass and haole koa, and plant native food and medicine plants to feed our growing community.

Why mālama with us? The Waipahu Māla project is a grassroots effort started by the Future Farmers of America Waipahu Chapter with guidance by lead advisor, Ken Kozuma and the newly assembled HOH Kūpuna advisory. The students of Waipahu have witnessed and experienced the hardships of our dependency for basic necessities such as clean water and access to food, this is what sparked their initiative to serve their community by starting a food producing forest!

At one point in time, this land was home to a terraced loʻi kalo that fed everyone from Hoʻaeʻae to Waipiʻo. We hope to recreate even a fraction of that abundance but we need more hands! Letʻs come together to huli ka lima i lalo, turn the hand downward, and feed our ʻohana and community. We will provide all tools, gloves and water refill stations. Please bring with you water bottleclosed toed shoessigned waiver forms, and sun protection.
