Mālama Mala – Garden Workday – Dec. 1

Hiʻipaka LLC, Waimea Valley

Join us for a morning caring for the gardens and cultural sites in Waimea Valley.

The morning will start at 9:00am with a welcome and protocol (oli). After cultural protocol, the group will head off to the project location, walking through some of the 350 acres of botanical gardens and historic Hawaiian cultural sites. The walk to the work site may be up to 1/2 mile on a paved pathway. Once at the site, the staff lead will review the project and provide guidance. Glove and tools are provided. Around noon, we will start to wrap up the project, gathering tools and supplies, and taking a moment to admire the work that was accomplished.

Potential tasks for Waimea Volunteer workdays include: removing weeds, invasive species and other unwanted plants; removing fallen, dried, dead leaves and fronds; and other general garden clean up tasks. Tools used include typical gardening tools such as trowels, hand rakes, loppers, small hand picks, and at times shovels.

An RSVP is required.

Recommended clothing and supplies:

  • Refillable water bottle
  • Closed toe shoes (required)
  • Wear appropriate clothing for gardening/yardwork
  • Insect Repellant

Ages 12 and up. Any volunteers under 18 will need to have a parent or guardian accompany them to volunteer. Work will be outdoors and in the elements.
