Lehua Māla Community Workday

Hui o Hoʻohonua

Bi-monthly Opportunity

Welcome to the Lehua Community Workday Opportunity!

Breaking ground in 2022, Hui o Hoʻohonua is proud to steward the Lehua Community Garden demonstration project located in Mānana (Pearl City) along the historic Leeward Bike Path. As one of three community demonstration projects stewarded by HOH, we envision the māla to be a productive and thriving space for farming native crops, medicines, and relationships between people and our natural world.

For many years, the current site of our māla was used as an illegal dumping ground for damaged vehicles, appliances, and more. In an effort to promote mobility, increase accessibility to food, mitigate overgrown greenery, and provide a space for residents to gather and mālama their community and build relationships with our neighbors, we created a wholistic green space called the “Hui Alaloa Lehua Māla“.

We are still in our beginning stages of this project. We appreciate all of the many guardeners who have chosen to protect and guard the natural resources found in this once prosperous land. Join us every last Saturday (of the odd numbered months) to mālama the land along the Leeward Bike Path near the HECO power plant. Take a look at the info below to know answer the 5 “W”s:

Who: All ages and experience levels welcome! Activities are small Keiki and kupuna friendly, the area is mostly shaded but can be rather hot during the summer time.

Where: Meet at Lehua Community Park and our crew will walk together to the site. It is approximately 4 minutes of walking from the bathrooms.

When: Last Saturdays of odd number months

What (tasks): Weeding invasive lilikoʻi vines, picking out cali/guinea grass root balls, removing castor bean and haole koa, leveling soil/mulch/ground, water plants, plant (when available), harvest (when necessary), trash and debris clean up, etc.

Why: Students in the community have found many benefits of having access to the māla. Ongoing maintenance and increased presence has made the bike path safer for students, kupuna, and other community members to utilize. Students and community members who live along the path have been able to harvest foods such as bananas and sweet potato for quick snacks to and from school or on morning walks. The māla has also afforded community members the opportunity to take part in gardening activities in a living area that may not normally afford them the space or resources necessary to steward on this scale. We hope to continue supporting the community through regularly scheduled workdays, providing educational opportunities, and hosting gatherings in this space.

Bring: Please bring water bottles, closed toed shoes, sun protection, and signed waivers (for first time volunteers only) that can be found by going to our website
