Reuse, Rewear, Relove – Mending & Clothing Repair Sewcials

The Sewing Hui

We are excited to share our new Monthly SEWING SEWCIAL events: “Reuse, Rewear, Relove – Mending & Clothing Repair Sewcials”. The next one will be Sunday, October 20th. There will be a morning session from 9am to 1pm, and an afternoon session from noon to 4pm! ☀

These events are monthly community gatherings where participants are invited into our sewing studio to repair, mend, upcycle and restyle their clothing. We will share sewing techniques for repairing and mending clothing in each session. The purpose of the program is to keep textile waste out of the landfill. After each sewcial, we will weigh the clothing and keep track of how much we have been able to save. Lunch will be provided and the event will be an opportunity for the community to connect. Join us for these sewcials to gather together, sew, chat, and enjoy lunch!

Space is limited per session so be sure to register in advance by emailing thesewinghui@gmail.com. This event is open to anyone – so please tell your friends, spread the word. Let’s keep clothing out of the landfill! Mahalo to the County of Maui Recycling Grants Program for supporting this new initiative!

The Sewing Hui

About the organizer

The Sewing Hui is a dedicated group of volunteer sewists and craftspersons who give their time generously to the Maui community. It is made up of residents and visitor-volunteers. The Sewing Hui’s mission is to help our community by donating hand-sewn items to organizations and groups in need across Maui. It is our hope that through our organization we can exemplify the power of community, generosity, and creating together–spreading aloha one stitch at a time.

The Sewing Hui evolved out of the Maui Face Mask Project. That project, conducted in the Spring of 2020, was started to address the critical shortage of N-95 face masks on Maui. The project created 10,411 high quality filter face masks for Maui’s healthcare providers.  These face masks were modeled after a flat-fold N-95 face mask provided by Kaiser Permanente Maui Lani Clinic. After the project was completed on May 15, 2020, the volunteers wanted to continue sewing for the community. Thus, The Sewing Hui was born. Founded and directed by dressmaker Jennifer Oberg, The Sewing Hui is a community volunteer organization.
