Net Patrol – Coastal Cleanup
Surfrider Foundation – Kauaʻi Chapter
Surfrider is looking for more volunteers to help with our weekly Coastal Cleanups – Net Patrols on Wednesday afternoons.
A great program that the Surfrider Kauaʻi Chapter runs is the Net Patrol to help collect and properly dispose derelict fishing gear that washes up on local beaches. Nets and ropes come primarily from the commercial fishing industry, drifting for thousands of miles across the ocean and winding up on Hawaiian shore. Whales, turtles, monk seals, birds and fish get entangled in these nets and could die. If they are washed back out to sea, they can continue to harm wildlife.
This weekly activity many times involves a hike to a remote rocky coastline. Volunteers need to be aware that this activity may not be appropriate for individuals who have injuries. The work can be very physically challenging but very rewarding.
Location changes depending on where the marine debris washes up.

Founded in 1984 by a handful of visionary surfers in Malibu, California, the Surfrider Foundation now maintains over 50,000 members and 90 chapters worldwide.The Kauaʻi Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation was founded in August 2006 by a small group of Kauaʻi’s active surfers who joined the national organization with its focus on CARE: Conservation, Activism, Research, and Education. We have an appetite for adventure and we all share a common passion – we love and appreciate our ocean, waves and beaches. We are an organization of committed volunteers.
